Ugandans have expressed their anger with the exorbitant expenditure of parliament during the trying times of the pandemic. This follows the recent UGX 200m given to each of the 529 legislators and 26 ex officios to procure vehicles at the time when the economy is struggling.
As if that is not enough Parliament of Uganda has recently hired office space for MPs at Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia’s Kingdom Kampala building worth 800 million per month on top of the 108 billion for their cars. The same parliament has been hiring expensive tents for plenary yet that money is enough to buy tents the same for parliament.
Parliament secured office space for new MPs at the Kampala Kingdom building with Ugandans asking why such huge amounts of tax payers money is wasted amidst the staggering economy. Ugandans suggest that some MPs sacrifice their office space and embrace the online plenary sessions as case is with other countries.
The 11th Parliament has 529 MPs who were all sworn in and ready to transact Parliament business but some lack office space. According to Helen Nanteza Kawesa, the assistant director communications and Public Affairs, Parliament secured one wing at the Kingdom Kampala building which will house the 323 MPs. This implies that at least 19 billion will be spent on just office space yet the same amount can be used to buy land and establish a spacious building for parliament.
As we report, office furniture has already been procured and is being fitted in. Ugandans are however asking themselves why parliament chose to rent on one of the most expensive buildings in Kampala with many sources saying a lot of backdoor deals dictated the decision to go for Sudhir’s Kingdom Kampala.
