Government has withdrawn from the treason case it slapped against former presidential candidate also ex personal physician to Museveni, Rtd. Col. Dr. Kizza Besigye. In a statement issued in one of the leading daily newspapers, government confirmed that it had lost interest in persecuting the veteran opposition figure.
In the aftermath of the 2016 polls, Besigye who was then Museveni’s main challenger on the ballot took it upon himself and declared self the legitimate president of the Republic of Uganda. Besigye went on to organize a parallel inauguration ceremony at a concealed venue where he was sworn in as the president for the 2016-21 term.
He was later traced and arrested by a join security operation. He was flown to Eastern Uganda at Moroto prison amid protests in downtown Kampala.
After spending close to 3 months in Luzira prison and house detention at his Kasangati residence, Besigye would later be bailed upon the conclusion of Museveni’s inauguration at Kololo independence grounds in May 2016.
Besigye’s clearance from the treason case comes at a time when he is struggling to replicate his past influence though he remains challenged by the unmatched popularity of the generational leader Kyagulanyi Ssentamu Robert aka Bobi Wine who now enjoys popular support within the public domain.
Political pundits have since the 2021 electoral time called on Besigye to join the Bobi Wine struggle so that his past achievements and legacy do not go wasted.
