Democratic Party president general Hon. Norbert Mao has come out to weigh in on the political landscape of Uganda which he says has been lucky to have a hardworking political party like DP.

Addressing a presser at the DP Headquarters at city house in the capital, Kampala, Mao laughed at all critics of the Democratic Party which he says is the only well grounded party in Uganda. According to Mao, DP’s boardroom approach has at least enabled the NRM regime to be checked. He says unlike other aggressive opposition players, the DP is a party of round table engagements.

“NRM likes people who tackle them at some level. Look at the age limit debate. People said they were going to do this and that. Were they able to do anything?,” he asked. “DP is the only serious opposition party. NRM can day with noise but not well planned action. DP tackles the NRM on the removal of bail. DP tackles problems at the source. Other parties treat symptoms,” he added.

He further used a figurative speech to emphasize his reiteration. “If you have pimples, you can apply powder and look nice for a function; when you return and wash off the powder, the pimples remain. You can also treat the cause of the pimples,” he said.

DP is one of the surviving pre-independence (pre-1962) political parties and in fact today it stands to be the oldest party in the country. Its once well grounded epicentre of support in central (Buganda) was erased and replaced with the newly formed National Unity Platform party. DP is currently on the verge of extinction with only 9 MPs in the eleventh parliament. Political pundits attribute DP’s failure to Mao’s politics of double standards as he is accused of being a strong ally of the ruling NRM party.
