As the country grapples with a serious economic meltdown that has seen citizens lose businesses and other sources of livelihood, Parliament is buying self-driving seventh generation luxury Mercedes Benz ceremonial cars for the Speaker and Deputy Speaker, according to credible reports investigated by a team of independent journalists.
The two S-Class series, L500 L AMG Line vehicles cost a whopping Pound Sterling 520,000 which is an equivalent of Shs 2.8bn.
The delivery date of the vehicles is June. Officials expected the cars to have arrived last week ahead of the State of the Nation address this week but the clearance involved has stalled the process.
Agather Atuhaire, an investigative journalist attached to Chimpreports, who followed the saga said the procurement of the cars was conducted irregularly.
We earlier reported about the luxurious brand new Mercedes-Benz series vehicles that were cleared by the office of the clerk to Parliament. The only factual error we wish to correct is that the clerk Adolf Mwesigye as an accounting officer is apparently procuring the vehicles on behalf of the offices of the Speaker Anita Among and her Deputy Thomas Tayebwa.
