Secondary school teachers in the arts section have a day after the budget reading declared industrial action in response to what they termed as ‘discriminatory salary increment’ for their counterparts in the sciences department. The teachers resolved that the government must enhance the salary for all teachers regardless of what they teach.

Under their umbrella, UNATU, the teachers declared that effective today, June 15, no arts teacher should step in the classroom in protest of government’s declaration. In a statement seen by this website, the teachers explain their actions;

Government has been blamed for considering increasing salaries of some civil servants, leaving out the very essential ones like teachers and health professionals.

By the time of filing this report, sources had intimated that the Education Ministry had summoned leaders of the teachers’ strike to have round table negotiations on how to resolve the impasse.
