Makerere University Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe has issued suspensions to National Unity Platform party flag aspirants over their recent foiled rally.
On Friday, the NUP Makerere Chapter had summoned a students general assembly where the party secretary general David Lewis Rubongoya was to preside it as the guest of honour, but police invaded the freedom square and violently dispersed the gathering. Arrests were instituted and the names of the students were forwarded to the office of the Vice Chancellor to take action.
The pronounced NRM cadre who now eyes a term extension with the state backing has nullified the activities of opposition candidates, declaring other political parties illegal and outlawed by the university regulations.
This website has learnt that several students who are NUP affiliated have been served with suspension letters from the university via the office of the Vice Chancellor.
Contacted for a comment, the University Public Relations Officer declined to divulge details stating that the matter is still at ‘administrative level’ and can only be discussed by those at that level.
